Keeler Racing
Whangarei Cruising Club organises club racing for keel yachts throughout the year.
An important aspect of this is the “winter series” which are held within the confines of Whangarei Harbour and are open to keel yachts from the Whangarei district and beyond and are typically entered into by boats from the 3 dominant yacht clubs based on the Whangarei Harbour.
The races are open to all boats willing to participate on the basis that the skippers or owners are a full member of an affiliated yacht clubs. Guest entries can also be accepted. Both keel yachts, trailer yachts and multi hulls are welcome.
The races normally start near the Onerahi foreshore on a line from the Onerahi Yacht Club tower to a mark on Limestone island. At times a different start location may be organised.
The winter series historically have been a series of 7 races held every fortnight followed by a spring series of 3 races.
This year we are doing 3 series with the first one “The Fall series” starting on the 5th
of April and is 5 races.
Directly followed by “The Winter series” consisting of 7 races and the followed by “The Spring series” of 4 races. So a total of 16 races over 30 weeks.
Scoring will be for individual races, a series and an overall season winner. There will be a discard applied after every 5th
race to acknowledge that not every one can attend all races due to a variety of reasons. A discard means that the worst race is not counted (a DNS would be the worst).
Both series are contested for the A and B class cups or trophy's with prizes handed out near the end of the year.
The A class means open class racing where all kinds of sail are allowed.
The B class is for boats carrying standard fore and aft sails for the boat and no extra's such as spinnakers are allowed.
There is no limitation on the number of crew for each and every boats but crew under the age of 16 need parental consent.
Courses are set taking into account the weather and tidal conditions and vary in length, turning marks etcetera.
After the conclusion of each race there is a wrap up social gathering at the WCC clubrooms at Kissing Point where the results are presented and the events of the day are chewed over while enjoying a drink and a snack.
So get on board and do both yourselves and your boat a favour.
