Kia Ora
She featured in Shoreline a Northern Advocate
Marine Monthly 2002. After 100 years sailing New Zealand waters, the last of
the Patiki class yachts, Kia Ora, is still sailing the Whangarei
Harbour. It's owner, Alf Attwood, a member of the Whangarei Cruising Club
since 1940,
is just 18 years younger. Kia Ora was built in 1902 by boatbuilder Arch
Logan for her original owner, Bob Murray. With a hull of one inch kauri,
Kia Ora is 44.6 feet LOA with a 9 foot beam and 1.8 foot draught
increasing to 7 feet with her centreboard down. Mr.Attwood bought her in
1947 and continues to enjoy sailing, with the Bay of Islands his
favourite destination. She sailed in the recent Barney's Barrel 2002 with
Robin, our patron, as a member of his crew.

AumoeAumoe is a
beautiful old timer built in 1913 by Tom Le Huquet who owned her until he
died in 1948. She is 42feet overall with 8'6" beam and draws 3'11"
(12.5mX2.7mX1.6m). Arthur Wilkinson, the manager of the Northern Motor Bus
Co, bought her then. Although she was a motored sailing vessel, he never
used the sails that were on board. Instead, the masts were used for radio
aerials, as with reception in those days, you needed a tall mast. Selwyn,
Arthurs eldest son, took over the boat in 1965 and in 1992 was sold to
Laurie White and Jill Kearney. When she was built in 1913, Aumoe
was flush decked with an open cockpit and no dodger, but by the time the
Wilkinsons bought her, she was already altered to the present
configuration. The hatch in the dodger over the seat provided visibility
all round. Below decks she had a head, a narrow galley, main saloon and
forward cabin. She is currently powered by a 72hp Ford diesel which drives
the old launch along at 10 knots. Aumoe is a Hawaiian word meaning "at
ease".
